What is the relationship between Mr. and Mrs. Bennet? How does Austen convey the tone Mr. Bennet uses with his wife?

Mr. Bennet married Mrs. Bennet out of her beauty, humor, and young apperance. Mrs. Bennet seems to be a very weak minded woman and her and her husband don't appear to have a very strong or affectionate relationship. The two characters are very different. While he is more interested in books, she is more of the foolish type who focous her attention mostly on her daughters.
Austen implies that the tone Mr. Bennet uses with Mrs. bennet is mostly sasrcasim. Although Mr Bennet tries to ignore Mrs. Bennets foolishness, he usually just makes fun of her instead. Austen gives the implication that Mr Bennet truly doesn't enjoy being in a realtionship with such a foolish woman and that he finds it hard to even love her.

  3. Do you think that it is possible that Mr. Bennet finds Mrs. Bennet uneducated and self-centered, and is still able love her, or does his sarcastic attitude towards her show that he does not love her whatsoever?

  4. I do see where you would infer that Mr. Bennet married Mrs. Bennet for her beauty. In the first chapter Mrs. Bennet says, "I certainly have had my share of beauty". Also, Mrs. Bennet probably married her husband for money since she is of lower social status than him. Nice conclusions Erika!

  5. Interesting insights, Erika! I like that you pointed out the idea of Mrs. Bennet being a "weak-minded woman." However, IS she weak minded? She certainly is not weak-willed. Also, do you mean to say that a woman must be bookish to be strong-minded, as Mr. Darcy does?

  6. I think that Mrs. Bennet is blinded by love. Im not sure if she actually loves her husband or if she just loves him for his money. Both Mrs. Bennet's characteristics of being self-centered and uneducated seem to be the major turnoffs towards Mr. Bennet. I do believe to some extent that Mrs. Bennet is weak-minded in a sense because she doesn't seem to think before she does things, nor does she seem well educated. I don't believe that Mrs. Bennet needs to be book smart in order to be smart, however; I don't think she has a broad amount of knowledge what so ever.

    1. However I like the conclusions you came to Erika, not too sure about how you said that Mr. Bennet finds it hard to love Mrs. Bennet. I believe he truly loves her deep down, but uses his sarcasm and dry wit to cover these feelings. I believe he takes pleasure in teasing her yet in a light hearted way. And I do also believe Mrs. Bennet loves him too, she does too acknowledge that he is teasing her but she brushes it off, yes money does probably come down to it in the end, and that the two characters couldn't be more different. But I believe they have a different love and express it though humour and wit. Nice comparison though, I like you take on their relationship.
